The BEMF Motor sensing Interlock is designed to control access to rotating machinery. The unit relies on the measurement of the electromotive force generated by the windings of an electric motor. Only when the motor has stopped will the BEMF drop to zero and allow the release of a Castell key. The unit is based around two identical isolated channels that conform to EN954 Category 2 safety requirements.

Designer Systems developed the device hardware and firmware which includes the following features:

  • Dual PIC16 based design.
  • Both channels used to confirm motor stop and make decision to activate safety relays.
  • Power supply configurable to 240VAC, 110VAC or 24VDC.
  • Motor voltages of up to 1200VAC supported.
  • Designed to comply with UL Standards and DIN VDE 0110 parts 1&2 for insulation.
